After a much-needed 6 month break from painting, Mike and I were ready to tackle a couple of painting projects.
Goodbye, Ye Old Mustard
Before
Since we moved in, the kitchen had been the same mustard color that it was when we bought the house. Mike had done some patch work when we first moved in, when we had intended to paint it immediately after move in, but then we got lazy so the kitchen looked particularly neglected. You can see below that we had even prepped the AC vents with painters tape…and it had sat prepped like that for 6 months.
The kitchen also had a fan/light that, combined with the dark mustard ceiling, did very little to illuminate the room in the evening.
One more area above the fridge which was desperately in need of some TLC. We think there might have been a cabinet above the fridge at some point in time.
We had originally thought about doing a different color from the rest of the first floor but it is a bit hard to pick a color that works with dark red/maroon floors and oak-y color cabinets so we stuck with our sand-y color that we had done the rest of the house in.
While prepping the kitchen, I noticed that there was a hint of a former wall color peeping out from under the mustard . It looks like a paint color that might have been popular in the 50’s or 60’s? It actually matches my retro mixer, which you can see in the picture above! Pretty neat and it makes me curious about how many other colors are hidden underneath the paint.

After painting just the ceiling, you can see that the amount of light reflected has noticeably increased:
Unrelated tip: That Trader Joe’s boxed red wine on the counter is pretty good! Well it’s cheap and it keeps forever at least. Maybe not the highest quality but you get used to the taste…
The Big Reveal!
A bit overexposed but…ta da! It really is bright in the kitchen now and feels more modern. Also, note the cute doggy guest, Evey, who clearly approves of the new paint color. (We dog sat shortly after painting the kitchen).
The spot above the fridge no longer draws attention for its unsightliness:
Guest room ceiling
A less drastic makeover occurred in the guest room. We just painted the ceiling, since the original wall color coincidentally works with our furniture.
