Yikes, so apparently I posted only once in all of 2017. I honestly don’t know how that happened but 2017 just flew by! So today I will share some updates we did to the patio back in…July. It only took me 6 months to put them up on the interwebs for all of you to see.
Back in August of 2016, our new patio fence was installed. You can read about that here. It was more intimate, but otherwise barren, as shown here:
In a few years, once we do the big kitchen/basement reno, we plan on doing a fancier patio update but for the time being, we just wanted to make it a bit more inviting with little cost & effort.

It all started when I impulsively bought an outdoor rug at Home Depot. Originally I was looking at all sorts of rugs online which involved a lot of hemming and hawing. But in the end, an impulsive purchase was the right move! I think this rug was under 50 bucks:
Already, the rug makes a big difference! And I actually do like the pattern.
Then it was time to infuse the space with some greenery. I have always wanted an herb garden because herbs are SO expensive at the grocery store and I wanted to always have mint handy to make spur-of-the-moment summer cocktails . Mike found some little hooks that you can attach to a fence so that they were out of Thambi’s reach:
Unfortunately, the herbs looked the best on the day this picture was taken. We are still working on how to keep them alive. We also got some potted plants and a couple little trees:
Finally we put up some lights for some more ambiance:
All of those things put together make a rather cozy patio on a budget! Here’s Mike grilling up some corn in a more inviting space:
We finished off our hard day of prepping the patio with some steaks, Rick Bayless-style! Yum!
