Hello friends! I hope you are all staying safe out there during this pandemic. One would think that we would have gotten a lot of house projects done but alas, we have not. We did finish up one project though and that is what I will share with all of you today!
Plain, ol’ windows
Our simple, little house is missing the accoutrements of fancy houses, like window trim and crown moulding. It is glaring obvious in these front windows in our living room, where we hang out most of the time and entertain people (on the rare occasion that have people over - we gotta work on that…). So we decided to jazz it up with some window trim!
See our sad, little windows.
You might also notice that a certain fluffy dog has done quite a bit of damage to the drywall, due to his bad habit of barking madly at passer-bys. He’s only 35 pounds!
The work begins…
We started this project in January with a stop at Home Depot, where we always stock up on toilet paper. Little did we know about the coronavirus slowly making its way towards us and the ensuing TP shortage, making this purchase quite prudent.
Please excuse my loungey look. This is about all I can muster early on a weekend morning.
I’ll spare you all the details of all the measuring, and leveling, and cutting, and more leveling that we had to do to finish just one window! We discovered that our windows aren’t exactly level (it’s an old house) and none of them are quite parallel with each other. Trying to make the trim appear level was quite a challenge.
I’ll just say that this was quite a long process. Here is Thambi watching Mike finish off the first window:
Now here is Thambi wondering when it will all be over so he can look out the window again:
Mike demonstrated how to do the middle window and then I proceeded to tackle the right window all on my own. First, tearing out the drywall so we can make room for a window sill. Wood will be more resistant to furious doggy scratching. That wood there looks hella old!
And after a few days of tedious work, we’re done installing the trim (I think we actually did this over 2 weekends)!
Now for the paint
A few weeks later, the pandemic hit, we were stuck inside and decided to finish off the painting. I wish we had painted the trim before installing it because taping it was a paiiinnn:
But after some puttying and a couple coats of paint, it was done!!! And what a difference, the windows look much bigger now! Here’s Thambi enjoying his new view and thinking about how that window sill makes it even easier for him to leer at pedestrians on the street. What have we done?!
Another vantage point, you can see the sanitizer that we keep by the front door, a sign of the times!
After a lot of work, we have 3 windows down and only…9 more to go… HALP!!!
Protecting the sill from terrifying claws
I bought this product called Sill Shield to protect our hard work from Thambi’s scratching. It came really quickly, blends in nicely, and has prevented a good bit of damage. I recommend it! It is actually in middle window in the 2 pictures above - I bet you didn’t even notice it! It’s quite subtle.
And now…a puppy picture.
Thambi was actually quite well-behaved while we were doing this project. He deals with the noise and the mess like a champ but I can’t help feeling like he is silently judging us. Look at that expression! What do you think? Hmmm.
