There has been a lot of activity at the country house and so I am quite behind in posting. You may recall that in July and August we took up all the carpet in the main house. This post is for some work we did in September.
Here’s what the floor look liked once we pulled up the carpet, we had a decent subfloor underneath. Thambi is happily wondering through the construction debris.
One thing I wasn’t really prepared for was how much floor we would need and how much that would cost. We’re used to a very tiny house in the city, not a bigger house in the sticks. Bigger house means more floors => more money. We discussed whether we should do real hard wood, engineered hard wood, or even try laminate to save money. The real hard wood was at least twice as expensive as the engineered hard wood so we went with the latter.
I knew I wanted a rustic, country look and something that felt natural in the location we were in. We got a deal on this Blue Ridge Oak from LL Flooring. Can’t really get any more perfect than Blue Ridge Oak floors in a house with a view of the Blue Ridge mountains! Here’s what the floors look like close up! This pic doesn’t do it justice; they are more honey-colored in person, with a much warmer tone.
Mike reasoned that with this much work to do in the house, he MUST upgrade his power tools. Here he is with his new toys, setting up shop in our master bedroom.
While he did all the cutting of the floors, I put down the underlayment. It really didn’t take too long to do the floors once we got the hang of it. We did two of the bedrooms minus some of the trickier spaces, like the closets, in about a weekend. Here’s the first room coming together:
And complete! I should also mention that we painted the walls as well before putting the floor down. We chose a neutral, slightly warm white - Sherwin Williams Alabaster:
And the second bedroom floor nearly complete!
That’s the update for now. You can see a hint of what’s to come as I am testing out a wallpaper sample while prepping some doors to paint!
And now…a puppy picture.
Thambi wants to stay close to us even with sawing, hammering, nailing, and painting. Once we got some underlayment down, I moved his bed so he had a comfortable place to watch us. He felt so at home that he took a nap in the middle of all the noise!
Mike snapped this awesome pic from our yard. It’s at the perimeter so not a view that one can see from the deck but we hope to have a firepit over near this side of the yard in the future so we can enjoy sunsets like this more easily!
