Hello friends! While Mike was demo-ing the kitchen in October, I was experimenting with painting the window trim black! It’s a popular trend in the Modern Farmhouse style. Given the clean white walls, I thought it would be a nice contrast.
I find using painters tape tedious and I also have challenges where sometimes the paint will bleed behind the tape despite my best effort. I wanted to experiment with a different method so I tried using this Liquid Mask which I read about in a blog post. You just paint it on. It starts out white but then dries clear as shown below.
Here’s the second window. You can see I did have to use some tape to protect the rest of the trim. Thambi is using this time to catch a nap.
Now for the black paint! It’s a little daunting as I never have painted anything this dark before. This is called Tricorn Black.
Then I painted the trim black. You can see the Liquid Mask is still on and the black lines aren’t super clean. I took the painters tape off before it fully dried.
Another pic, up close.
Then, once the paint is dry, you just run a utlity knife and peel off the mask, getting a super clean line. The mask is kinda like cellophane at this point so it peels right off the window pane. You can see that the left part of the trim is very clean where I have already cut it in the next pic. One lesson for the future is that I should have painted it on much thicker as it would have peeled off in a single layer, instead of the slivery pieces that I experienced this time.
Side note, with all the DIY work in the country house, I decided I needed my own tools and tool belt! Mike initially was supportive but now makes fun of my tool belt! He thinks it is a bit more style than function but I disagree. See how it holds my utility knife???
And after more peeling, voila! Lovely black window trim with very clean lines! Note how it adds lovely contrast to the view outside, framing it like a picture.
Another pic with both windows complete.
Next we put up a few extra decor touches. We bought this window shade for the left window because there isn’t enough space for a curtain. I like the look, adds a bit more warmth to the room, but as you can see, they don’t fully block the light. Good thing, it’s a rural area so there is no foot traffic!
On the other window, we put up some blackout curtains.
I bought this funky lamp with a deer on it! The nightstand is from Target.
And with the windows complete! We are officially ready for guests! Although the rest of the house is a bit of a construction zone but at least you can retire to this sanctuary.
In fact, shortly after this Mike’s parents came to visit and stayed for nearly 2 weeks. More on this in the next post!
And now…a puppy picture.
It was a beautiful Fall day so while the paint dried, I took Thambi out to run around the yard. He decided that he just wanted to sniff grass instead but he agreed it was a lovely view. This is facing south at our neighbor’s yard.
And another one because he is such a cute fuzz ball!
