Renovating a whole house in our free time can sometimes be overwhelming. We had made a lot of progress by November, but there was still SO much to be done. Shortly after kitchen demo in October, Mike began to contemplate whether we would ever finish.
Luckily, we had some help that came in November! The rest of this post covers a few weeks of work.
Mike’s parents came for nearly two weeks just to help with the house. I had a bunch of travel at this time and wasn’t able to help much myself but it’s amazing how some extra hands can really accelerate our goals! Teddy, Mike’s parents’ dog, looks quite at home in all the construction:
Second guest room
I wanted some themes in each of the rooms so I found this lovely birch wallpaper for the second guest room. Mike’s parents, Fred and Sheryl, put up the wallpaper. Sheryl even did the outlet covers so they really blend in! Although that was done after this pic was taken.
They also painted the window and put up drapes.
Mike made a ton of progress on the floors. He had to move the saws outside at this point as we didn’t want sawdust in our finished rooms, but it was a lovely time of year to be outside.
Here is an in-progress and after pic of the master bedroom floors.
Master Bedroom
As a reminder, this is what the master bedroom looked like when we first moved in:
And after this flurry of activity (including painting walls), the master bedroom looks like this! There are still some things
to do (like the baseboards) but it’s starting to come together.
Living Room
Similarly, they made progress on the living rooms floor and painting the living room ceiling.
And the living room furniture that I bought finally arrived after 4 months! These were from Pottery Barn. We were particularly
excited about the swivel recliners so that we could face the living room or the mountain view.
And with the TV, rug, TV stand, and coffee table, the room is starting to take shape.
Opening up the kitchen
The biggest project was taking down the kitchen wall.
There was a bit of work to do in the attic to be able to remove the wall. Mike’s aunt and uncle also came to lend a hand during this time.
Mike apparently partly fell through the ceiling while they were working in the attic. He was fine but had a very large bruise!
And finally the view from the dining area and from the kitchen without the wall!!!
And now…a puppy picture.
In this case, it’s puppies! Teddy and Thambi approve of the new living room recliners, although one wonders where the humans will sit now?!
